Batwara 1947
A Partition drama reuniting Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi — releasing this Independence Day weekend
Certified A
Releases 14 Aug 2026
Movie Overview
Batwara 1947 is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit under Aamir Khan Productions, distributed by Reliance Entertainment, and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. A.R. Rahman scores it, Santosh Sivan shoots it, and Javed Akhtar writes the lyrics. It releases worldwide in theatres on 14 August 2026 — a day before Independence Day, and not by accident.
Barcelona & Catalunya Showtimes
No Barcelona or Catalunya screening has been officially confirmed yet — no cinema, no dates, no format, no subtitle language.
Reliance Entertainment titles have reached Multicines Arenas and Cines Filmax Gran Via before, so a Spain release is plausible, but nothing is locked in yet.
At the time of writing, this information has not yet been officially confirmed. We’ll update this post the moment a distributor or cinema confirms Barcelona showtimes.
Cast
This is Sunny and Karan Deol’s first film together on a Partition story, alongside Shabana Azmi and Ali Fazal in key supporting roles.
Director
Rajkumar Santoshi directs — his first collaboration with Sunny Deol since Ghayal and Ghatak. The film was originally titled Lahore 1947 before being renamed to avoid political controversy, and it’s adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s stage play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.
Story
Set during India’s 1947 Partition, Batwara 1947 centres on a Hindu woman who refuses to leave her house after a Muslim family moves in — and the fragile, complicated bond that forms between them as the country breaks apart around them. The film’s tagline says it plainly: “Har insaan ka pehla mazhab MAA hai” — every person’s first religion is their mother.

Final Thoughts
Batwara 1947 isn’t a festive Independence Day watch — it’s Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi going back to one of Indian history’s rawest chapters, backed by Aamir Khan and scored by A.R. Rahman. India gets it on 14 August. Barcelona’s turn is still unconfirmed.
