Getting Your
Health Card,
Step by Step
Post #1 covered the big picture. This post is the actual walkthrough — how to get your TSI (Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual), the card that gives you real, working access to CatSalut.
Step 1: Register Your Address First
Before anything else, you genuinely need to be empadronado (registered as a resident) at your local ajuntament. This isn't just a formality for this specific process — your registered address is what determines which CAP you're actually assigned to, so this step has to come first.
Step 2: Establish Your Right to Healthcare
If you're working and contributing to Social Security, this part is genuinely automatic — your coverage is already established through your job. If you're not (not yet working, or in the situation covered by Post #1's headline fact), there's a separate step: a formal "reconocimiento del derecho a la asistencia sanitaria" (recognition of your right to healthcare access), handled through your local CatSalut office alongside your empadronamiento.
Step 3: Book Your Appointment and Bring the Right Documents
Genuinely three ways to do this: call 061, book online through your local sanitary area's website, or — once you already have an account — through La Meva Salut, CatSalut's digital health portal.
Your NIE or passport, your empadronamiento certificate, and — if applicable — the documents establishing your right to healthcare from Step 2. Having photocopies ready genuinely speeds up the appointment.
This is genuinely where your TSI application is actually processed and submitted.
Step 4: What Happens After You Apply
This genuinely works the same as the physical card while you wait — this post's headline fact.
Timing genuinely varies, so don't be alarmed if it takes a few weeks — use your provisional document in the meantime.
Genuinely worth doing — this digital portal lets you book appointments, see test results, and manage your healthcare without always needing to call or visit in person.
Genuinely won't work — this step has to come first, since it determines your assigned CAP.
Genuinely worth preparing these in advance to avoid a wasted trip or delay.
Genuinely unnecessary — your provisional document covers you from day one.
Ask the community — plenty of people have done this exact process.
Real, current experiences genuinely help everyone else move through this faster.
