Barcelona's biggest street party kicks off this week — plus the August admin curveballs nobody warns you about.
Festa Major de Gràcia is ON — Aug 15 to 21
23 streets in Gràcia get transformed into hand-built themed scenes, all free to enter. The opening pregó is Aug 14; go on a weekday evening (Mon–Wed) to actually see the decorated streets without the weekend crush. Nearest metro: Fontana or Joanic (L3).
Aug 15 is a national holiday — do your errands today
Banks, post offices, and most government counters shut nationwide for Assumption Day (Aug 15). If you need banking, Correos, or any admin task done this week, get it in before Friday — everything reopens Monday but queues will be brutal.
"Cerrado por vacaciones" — call before you go
Family-run clinics, dentists, hairdressers and small shops close on rolling 2–4 week schedules through August — with zero central calendar. Always check the Google listing or call ahead, and if your regular doctor is closed, ask your CAP for the backup clinic covering their patients.
Regular pharmacy shut? Find the farmacia de guàrdia
Every neighbourhood always has one pharmacy open 24 hours on a rotating duty roster, even when the rest are closed for August. The nearest one is posted on the shuttered pharmacy's door, or search "farmacia de guardia" plus your neighbourhood for the current list.
Beat the heat without wrecking your electricity bill
If you're on a PVPC hourly-rate plan, electricity is priciest in the 2–6pm window. Pre-cool your flat in the morning, close blinds at midday, and run the AC or washing machine overnight instead — check your provider's app for today's cheap hours.
TIE expiring in September or October? Start now
You can file your TIE renewal up to 60 days before it expires, and doing so keeps you legal even if the card lapses while you wait. Extranjería is short-staffed in August and cita previa slots take 2–4 weeks to appear — check your expiry date today and book now if you're inside that window.
Taking the kids to the correfoc? Read this first
The correfoc (fire run) has costumed devils and dragons setting off sparklers at street level — thrilling but genuinely close-contact fire. Wear closed shoes and cotton (not synthetic) clothing, tie back long hair, and check the printed programme for the earlier, calmer sessions if you're bringing children.
Catch the castells — free and worth the detour
Human-tower performances (castells) run during the festival, usually around Plaça Rius i Taulet — check the day's programme board in the square. It's one of the most striking pieces of Catalan culture you'll see all year, and standing room is always free.
