Why Festa Major de Gràcia is worth planning around
Festa Major de Gràcia is Barcelona’s best-known neighbourhood festival, held every August in Vila de Gràcia — a district that was its own independent town until Barcelona annexed it in 1897, and which has never quite let go of that separate identity. The festival traces back to 1817, when residents gathered at Can Trilla to mark the Mare de Déu d’Agost (Feast of the Assumption) on 15 August, according to the Ajuntament de Barcelona.
What sets Gràcia apart from Barcelona’s other neighbourhood festivals is the scale of amateur craftsmanship: roughly two dozen streets and squares, each run by a resident comissió de festes, spend months building ceiling-to-ceiling decorations from recycled materials — painted cardboard, cork, bottle caps, CDs, plastic bottles. Themes stay secret until days before the festival opens.
The result sits somewhere between an open-air art installation and a giant block party: genuinely grassroots, almost entirely free, and loud, hot and densely packed in equal measure.

🎨 Decorated streets
23 streets and squares, each run by an independent resident commission, build themed ceiling-to-ceiling installations from recycled materials. This is the heart of the festival.
🎵 Concerts
Free stages run in squares and gardens — Jardins de la Sedeta and Plaça del Sol among them — alongside street sound systems and DJ sets running late into the night.
🔥 Traditional culture
Castellers (human towers), correfocs (fire runs), gegants (giants) and sardana dancing — deeply rooted Catalan traditions, not festival-invented spectacle.
🍽️ Food & drink

Getting there
Metro — L3 (green) to Fontana, Lesseps or Diagonal; L4 (yellow) or L5 (blue) to Verdaguer. Joanic (L4) serves the eastern side — check TMB’s live status before travelling.
Bus — Local press reports roughly twenty lines serving Gràcia during the festival, including D40, D50, H6, H8, H10, V15, V17, V19 and routes 6, 7, 19, 22, 24, 27, 33, 34, 39, 47, 114 and 116.
Walking — Gràcia is compact; most decorated streets sit within a 15-minute walk of each other.
Bike — Bicing docks ring Gràcia’s perimeter, but interior streets close to all traffic including bikes during event hours.
