📍 El Raval, Barcelona

Raval is still the beating heart of South Asian Barcelona. Walk its narrow lanes on any evening and you’ll catch the smell of cardamom and frying samosas drifting out of doorways, competing with fresh naan from the bakery next door. This is where Barcelona’s Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities have shopped for decades — shelves stacked with atta, spice tins, gold-thread dupattas, and, around this time of year, trays of rakhis in every style from a simple thread to fully bejewelled.

There are a handful of Indian grocery and cash-and-carry stores scattered through the neighbourhood — these are general grocery shops rather than dedicated gift shops, so stock varies. Call ahead to confirm they have rakhis in before you make the trip, especially close to the festival. Give yourself twenty minutes to just wander — Raval rewards it.

📍 L’Hospitalet de Llobregat

If you’re on the L1 side of town, save yourself the trip into Raval. L’Hospitalet has quietly built its own South Asian pocket over the last decade, tucked among warehouses and workshops rather than a tourist-facing high street — the kind of area locals know about and visitors usually don’t. It’s less polished than Raval, but the upside is real: shorter queues, friendlier prices, and shopkeepers who’ll actually stop and chat about back home.

📍 Badalona

Badalona’s South Asian community has grown fast around Sant Roc over the past few years, and with it, a scatter of bazaars and general stores selling everything from saris to spices to phone top-ups.
