Barcelona's school year starts Tuesday, Sept 8 — here's everything Indian expat families need to sort this week, plus admin deadlines that quietly line up with it.
Classes start Tuesday, Sept 8 — for everyone
For the first time, infantil, primària, ESO, batxillerat and FP all start the same day: Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Buy uniforms and supplies this week — shops and copy centres get slammed in the final days. Call your child's centre to confirm first-day timing; many schools run shortened hours for the opening days.
Missed the school lunch aid deadline? There's a second window
If you missed the May–June ajuts de menjador application, Barcelona's Consorci d'Educació opens a second window from Sept 8 to Sept 27, 2026. It's income-based support toward school lunch costs — apply through the telematic form even if your child is already enrolled.
Just arrived? Use "matrícula viva" for a late school seat
Families who land in Barcelona after the normal spring enrollment window can still get a school place through matrícula viva, managed by the Consorci d'Educació. You'll need to be empadronat first — sort that before you request a seat, since it's a hard requirement.
Check your empadronamiento renewal date
If you're non-EU without long-term residency, your padrón registration must be personally confirmed at an OAC every two years or the ajuntament can drop you from the register. This also affects school enrollment and future TIE renewals — book your cita previa as soon as your two years are close, since slots fill up fast.
TIE expiring soon? Open your 60-day window on day one
You can file your TIE renewal starting 60 calendar days before it expires, and there's a 90-day grace period after — but filing late in that grace window can mean a fine of €500–1,000. Check your card's expiry date now and book your cita as soon as the 60-day window opens, before appointments run out.
Lock in the T-Jove discount before term starts
The T-Jove keeps its 50% discount for 2026 — unlimited travel across all zones for a full trimester, now managed through your T-mobilitat card. Set up or top up your card online this week rather than queuing at the metro machines during the first chaotic days of term.
Two school holidays land in the first three weeks
September 11 (Diada Nacional) and September 24 (La Mercè, Barcelona's local school holiday) are both no-school days right after the year begins. If this is your first year here, sort childcare or plans for these two dates now — they catch a lot of newly arrived families off guard.
Ask before you buy every book new
Many schools run an AMPA book bank or a second-hand exchange for textbooks, and some material costs are covered by separate ajuts from the Consorci. Ask your school office before spending on a full new set — it's a common first-year expense families overpay for.
