Story (No Spoilers)
Set in pre-Independence India, the film follows Lakshmi Narayan, a boy from Akbarpur in the Braj region. After losing his mother, he leaves home convinced that finding God is the only way to see her again.
His search takes him through villages, temples and forests across North India. Along the way, the idea of what devotion means shifts — from escaping the world to serving it. That journey is how the boy becomes the saint millions know as Neem Karoli Baba.
A second thread follows Bhonsle, a freedom fighter whose path from underground rebel to seeker runs through Maharaj-ji's guidance.
Trailer
The official trailer dropped on 18 July 2026 via Times Music.
Why Watch It
Forget star power — this one had none. First-time director, first-time lead, a budget under ₹2 crore, and an opening day of roughly ₹10 lakh. Its shows were cut in the first fortnight while it fought for screens against bigger releases like Toxic.
Then word of mouth kicked in. By 3 September it had crossed ₹72 crore net in India, and it now ranks as the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2026. A sequel has already been announced.
The honest take: reviews are split. Critics credited Shobhinaw Satyaa's understated lead performance and the film's sincerity, while pointing to a slow, episodic structure. Audiences are divided too — some find it deeply moving, others call it heavy on miracles and light on craft.
Who'll love it: devotees of Maharaj-ji, families who grew up with Kainchi Dham stories, and anyone who enjoys slow, faith-led cinema. Who might not: anyone expecting a Hanuman mythology epic — it's a biopic of the saint, not a film about Hanuman himself.
