Diwali & Bandi Chhor Divas 2026: The Complete Guide for Indians in Catalonia
Everything Indians and Sikhs in Barcelona and Catalonia need for Diwali 2026 — dates, verified temples and gurdwaras, fireworks law, real Amazon Spain sweets, and restaurant offers. Nothing invented, nothing copy-pasted from last year.
Diwali — the Hindu festival of lights — falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. For Sikhs, the same date marks Bandi Chhor Divas, the day Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was released from imprisonment at Gwalior Fort and returned to Amritsar, where the Golden Temple was lit in celebration.
These are related but distinct observances. Diwali centres on the Hindu story of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya and the worship of Goddess Lakshmi. Bandi Chhor Divas is a specifically Sikh historical commemoration with its own meaning, rooted in the story of Guru Hargobind Sahib’s release and his insistence on freeing 52 Hindu kings imprisoned alongside him. Both are widely celebrated with lights, sweets and fireworks on the same day — but Bandi Chhor Divas is not simply “Diwali for Sikhs,” and we’ve tried to keep that distinction clear throughout this guide rather than flattening the two into one story.

📅 When Is Diwali 2026?
Diwali / Deepavali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, with Lakshmi Puja traditionally performed in the evening during Pradosh Kaal. The same date is observed as Bandi Chhor Divas by Sikhs.
We looked for a confirmed, organised Diwali 2026 community event in Barcelona or wider Catalonia at the time of writing and could not verify one yet — temple and gurdwara programmes for specific dates are typically only announced a few weeks ahead. Rather than guess or reuse an old year’s event listing, we’re leaving this section open: check directly with your nearest temple or gurdwara (see the directory below), or watch the Catalunyaar WhatsApp channel, where we’ll share confirmed events as soon as we can verify them.
🛕 Hindu Temples & Sikh Gurdwaras in Catalonia
We built a full, address-verified directory as a separate guide — every location individually checked on Google Maps, with closed and unverifiable listings explicitly excluded rather than published with a caveat.

2 verified Hindu temples, 12 verified gurdwaras across Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona — plus what we checked and left out.
🧨 Fireworks: What’s Legal
Fireworks law in Catalonia operates on three layers — national categories, a Catalan forest-fire restriction, and local municipal rules. We wrote a full, sourced breakdown rather than squeeze it in here.

✅ Family Diwali Checklist
- Diyas, candles or fairy lights — check fire safety if you have young children or pets
- Rangoli materials (coloured powder, flowers, or a stencil if you’re short on time)
- Sweets ordered or bought in advance — Amazon delivery times get longer closer to the date
- Fireworks only if you’ve checked the rules (see our legal guide) — sparklers are the simplest safe option
- A plan for which temple or gurdwara you’re visiting, and their current timings (call ahead)
- New or clean clothes for the evening, if that’s part of your family’s tradition
- A fire extinguisher, bucket of water, or damp towel nearby if you’re using any open flame or fireworks
- A quieter alternative ready (lights and diyas only) if you live in a flat with elderly or noise-sensitive neighbours
