You don't need fluency to survive a NIE appointment, a bank meeting, or a doctor's visit — you need about 30 specific phrases, said with confidence. Here they are, organized by exactly the situations this whole platform is built around.

This post gives you the actual phrases for those specific moments, not classroom Spanish, but the exact sentences that get real things done at a real counter.
A tip that matters here: you don't need to memorize perfect grammar. Said clearly and with a bit of confidence, these phrases work — and if you genuinely get stuck, "¿puede hablar más despacio, por favor?" (Section 4) is always available.
At the Extranjería or Police Station (NIE, TIE)
Virtually every in-person immigration procedure — NIE assignment, TIE issuance and renewal, and fingerprinting — requires a cita previa (prior appointment), and you'll need to state clearly why you're there the moment you walk in.
A genuinely useful practical tip: organise your paperwork in the order it's typically requested — form (EX-17), fee payment receipt, official resolution, passport, photos, then padrón certificate. Fumbling through a folder at the counter is exactly the kind of moment where confident phrases matter most.
At the Bank
Whether you're opening your first account or handling routine transactions, these cover the genuinely common scenarios.
At the Doctor or Centro de Salud
Getting your tarjeta sanitaria (health card) registered and knowing how to describe a problem clearly makes a real difference here.
Universal "Getting Help" Phrases — Use These Anywhere
These work in every situation above, and genuinely take the pressure off when you're stuck.
If a counter defaults to Catalan, "¿puedo responder en español, por favor?" is genuinely all you need — it's your protected legal right, and staff switch without friction almost every time.
Nodding along without understanding genuinely creates more problems later — "¿puede hablar más despacio?" costs nothing and saves real confusion.
Genuinely imperfect Spanish, said clearly, gets things done — waiting for fluency before attempting these situations just delays getting your paperwork sorted.
