Barcelona’s Metro Is Torn Up This Summer — Here’s Your Survival Map (L1, Plaça de Sants & 4 More Closures)

You tap in at Plaça de Sants, headphones in, half-asleep, and walk straight into a metal barrier where the L1 platform used to be. A TMB poster is taped to it. Somewhere behind you, someone’s already on the phone saying they’re going to be late.

If that’s been your July so far, you’re not imagining things. TMB is running five separate works projects across the metro network at the same time this summer, and the biggest one — the L1 cut between Florida and Plaça de Sants — has just started. We pulled every date, station and workaround straight from TMB’s official service alerts so you don’t have to keep refreshing their site. Bookmark this one.

🔴 The big one: L1 closed between Florida and Plaça de Sants

17 July – 28 August 2026 (through the end of service that Friday). No L1 trains run through Florida, Torrassa, Santa Eulàlia or Mercat Nou — the whole stretch into Plaça de Sants is shut for a full track renewal between Mercat Nou and Santa Eulàlia, plus junction works at Santa Eulàlia. TMB is calling it a €11.5 million job, and it’s affecting roughly 40,000 validations a day.

One thing worth knowing if you’re headed to L’Hospitalet: Sunday 19 July is a slightly special day — both the metro and the replacement bus run until 1am instead of the usual Sunday closing time.

What replaces it:

• 🚌 A dedicated replacement bus running the full Florida ↔ Plaça de Sants corridor, every 4–11 minutes depending on the day, with up to 18 articulated buses on the road on weekdays. Budget roughly 25–32 minutes end to end — slower than the train, so build in the extra time.
• 🚇 L5 or L9S/L10S can still get you into Plaça de Sants if you transfer.
• 🚆 FGC runs between Av. Carrilet and Espanya as a parallel option.
• 🚆 Rodalies covers Rambla Just Oliveras to Espanya.
• ♿ A separate accessible shuttle runs Hostafrancs ↔ Plaça de Sants, priority boarding for reduced-mobility passengers, since Plaça de Sants itself isn’t fully step-free.

What else is closed at the exact same time

This is the part that catches people out — L1 isn’t the only thing torn up right now. Four more works are running in parallel, and a couple of them stack directly onto your L1 problem if Plaça de Sants or Catalunya are part of your usual route.

• 🟡 Verdaguer (L4) — closed 6 July to 30 August for a €8.7M accessibility overhaul (new elevators, wider platforms). Trains bypass the station; use Diagonal or Sagrada Família to switch lines instead.
• 🟢 The L1↔L3 Catalunya connector — closed 6 July into the first week of September (reports vary between the 6th and 7th — check tmb.cat close to the date) for paving, lighting and asbestos removal. You’ll need to exit and re-enter at street level (about 300m between the Pelai/La Rambla and Ronda de Sant Pere exits). TMB has confirmed you won’t be charged twice for the re-entry.
• 🔵 The L1↔L5 connector at Plaça de Sants — closed since 27 April, already running well before this L1 stretch even started, so if your commute leans on that interchange, it’s been disrupted for months already.
• 🟠 La Sagrera ↔ Onze de Setembre (L9/10 Nord) — closed 25 June to 6 September (phase one), extending to Bon Pastor for a final week after that, for structural work at the Sagrera interchange.

✅ Your survival checklist for the next 6 weeks

• 📱 Check tmb.cat or the TMB app before you leave — not the night before. Works can shift, and Sunday 19 July’s extended hours are a good example of a detail that’s easy to miss.
• ⏰ Add 15–20 minutes to any journey that used to run through Florida, Plaça de Sants, Verdaguer, Catalunya or Sagrera.
• 🎟️ Don’t panic about double fares — TMB has confirmed the Catalunya connector re-entry and the replacement buses don’t cost you an extra validation.
• ♿ If you need step-free access, use the dedicated accessible shuttle between Hostafrancs and Plaça de Sants rather than the general replacement bus.
• 🗓️ Mark 28 Aug, 30 Aug and 6/7 Sep in your phone — that’s when things start reopening, staggered across the different lines.
