Do You Actually
Need to File a
Tax Return?
The declaración de la renta genuinely doesn't apply to everyone — but the thresholds have real exceptions that catch people off guard, especially if you've changed jobs or you're autónomo. Here's the actual breakdown.
The Basic Threshold: One Employer
If you earned income from a single employer during the tax year and it was below €22,000 gross annually, you're genuinely not obligated to file — this is the general baseline rule for most standard employment situations.
The Multiple-Payer Trap: €15,876
If you had two or more employers during the year (genuinely common if you changed jobs, or worked more than one job at once), the threshold drops to €15,876 — but only if your income from the second employer onward (combined) exceeded €1,500 for the year. If your second-and-later employer income combined stayed under €1,500, the higher €22,000 threshold still applies.
A genuinely common scenario for this audience — starting a new job partway through the year means you had two payers, and it's worth actually calculating whether the €15,876 threshold applies to your specific situation rather than assuming the standard €22,000 figure covers you.
Autónomos: No Minimum Threshold At All
If you were registered as autónomo (self-employed) at any point during the year — even briefly, even with minimal earnings — you're genuinely required to file, full stop. This applies regardless of income amount, and it's specifically why this post's headline fact exists: many autónomos assume the general employee thresholds apply to them, and they genuinely don't.
Why You Might Want to File Even If You Don't Have To
Even if you're genuinely not obligated to file, it can be worth doing anyway if the result would be a refund — a common scenario is having more IRPF withheld throughout the year than you actually owed, especially if you changed jobs or had irregular income. Filing voluntarily is the only way to actually get that money back.
Genuinely doesn't — this post's headline fact, no minimum threshold applies.
Genuinely worth calculating this specifically, per Section 2, rather than assuming.
Genuinely leaves money on the table — Section 4 covers why this is worth doing.
Ask the community, or consult a gestor for anything genuinely complex.
Real, current experiences help — but a gestor is genuinely worth it for anything beyond the standard cases covered here.
