About Kali Puja
On the new-moon night of Kartik, while much of India celebrates Diwali, Bengali homes and pandals turn to Ma Kali. Kali Puja, also called Shyama Puja, is performed at Nisith, the deepest part of the night. That's why this programme runs from Sunday evening into the small hours of Monday.
The night builds slowly: a cultural programme first, then purification rituals, the Maha Sankalpa (the formal vow that opens the puja), the Nisith pujo itself, a havan (fire offering), and finally pushpanjali and maha arati, when everyone offers flowers to the goddess together.
- Arrive from 08:00 PM for the cultural program at 08:30 PM.
- Stay up for the Nisith pujo at 12:20 AM, the heart of the night.
- Join pushpanjali and maha arati at 01:45 AM.
