1985 — The Pioneer
Namaste opens
Nanik Ramchandani opens Namaste on Carrer de Villarroel — the first Indian restaurant in Barcelona. 100+ dishes, a real tandoor, Bollywood nights on Saturdays. In a city of jamón, it was a revolution. Now closed, never forgotten.
1990s
The Olympic wave
The '92 Games turn Barcelona global overnight. New Indian kitchens root themselves in the Raval and Gòtic, and Sindur arrives with Rajasthani furniture and chefs from Kolkata.
2000 – 2008
Bollywood, Tandoor & Mayura
Bollywood Restaurant opens on Drassanes in 2000. Tandoor follows in 2002 — a father-and-son project that raises the bar. Mayura (2006) becomes the most-reviewed Indian restaurant in Spain. Shanti lands in 2008.
2010s
Gràcia becomes the heartland
A new generation stops watering down the spice. Swagatam, Indian Herbs and Veg World India make Gràcia the capital of proper Indian cooking, while Chennai Masala Dosa introduces the city to real Tamil tiffin.
2026 — Today
Saravanaa Bhavan lands on La Rambla
The globally famous Chennai chain opens on La Rambla in 2026 — proof Barcelona is now a serious Indian food city. 70+ restaurants and counting. The scene Namaste started is thriving.
