The School System,
Actually
Explained
Starting a new series on family life in Catalunya. This post covers the genuine basics of how schooling here is structured — public, concertada, and private — plus a fact that genuinely reassures a lot of anxious parents.
Three Types of Schools, Genuinely Understood
Genuinely free — every child living in Barcelona has a right to a place in the public system at no cost. Follows the official Catalan curriculum.
Genuinely a Spain-specific hybrid — publicly funded but privately run, following the same official curriculum as public schools, usually with small additional fees for extras.
There's also a third option: fully private schools, including international schools that follow foreign curricula — genuinely worth considering if you're looking for continuity with a specific education system, though these come with real tuition costs.
Compulsory Education: 6 to 16
School is genuinely mandatory from age 6 to 16 (educación primaria through ESO). Infant education (0-6, covering guarderías and P3-P5) is genuinely not compulsory but very widely used, and Post #3 in this series covers the 0-3 childcare stage specifically, since it works quite differently from the compulsory school system.
What the Rest of This Series Covers
Post #2 walks through the actual enrollment process (preinscripció) step by step, including a genuinely important fact about how the points system works. Post #3 covers childcare before school age. Post #4 covers healthcare specifically for kids. Post #5 covers after-school life and summer. Post #6 looks at raising kids between cultures. Post #7 covers the financial support that genuinely exists for families.
Genuinely unnecessary — this post's headline fact.
Genuinely worth researching specific schools rather than assuming cost equals quality.
Genuinely worth reading Post #2 well ahead of the actual window.
