Picture this: you're standing in the narrow streets of a small Spanish town, surrounded by thousands of people from every corner of the globe — and suddenly, trucks roll in loaded with over 100 tonnes of overripe tomatoes. A cannon fires. And all hell breaks loose, gloriously.

What is La Tomatina?
Every year on the last Wednesday of August, the sleepy town of Buñol — about 40 km west of Valencia — is transformed into the most colourful battlefield on Earth. Trucks loaded with ripe tomatoes enter the Plaza del Pueblo, a signal gun fires at noon, and for exactly one hour, 20,000 participants pelt each other with tomatoes purely for the joy of it.
What started as a spontaneous scuffle during a local parade in 1945 has grown into an Official Festival of International Tourist Interest since 2002. It was even banned under Franco — and brought back by popular demand.
Since 2013, attendance has been strictly capped at 20,000 and requires an official entry ticket. No ticket, no entry — and they genuinely sell out months in advance.
How the Day Unfolds
- 6:30 AMDepart Barcelona with Kaur Tours. Settle in, it's a fun group journey.
- ~9:00 AMArrive in Buñol. The town hall serves breakfast — bread, pastries, and pure anticipation.
- 10:00 AMPre-battle fun begins. Brave souls attempt the cucaña — a greased pole with a ham leg on top. When someone grabs it, the battle is officially declared open.
- 12:00 NOON🔫 The cannon fires. Trucks roll in. Everything turns red. You are now part of the world's biggest food fight.
- 1:00 PMSecond cannon shot — the fight is over. Fire trucks hose down the streets (and everyone in them).
- AfternoonShower up, grab lunch in Buñol's bars, and enjoy the post-battle glow. Return journey to Barcelona.
